As reported after the race;

“A lemony crash for your Tuesday morning. I was in a 2001 Monte Carlo, was being over taken by a quicker car. you can see I stayed tight after the apex to leave him room, and stayed on the outside at the next apex to let him complete the pass, unfortunately going into 10 down hill off camber, my car was fully loaded and I had little left to try and miss the jetta. I did try. Had I been in the miata I think I could have pulled it off ;( the jetta started the spin because he was braking after being FULLY loaded, had he just released the brakes he may have backed out of the way just enough for me to miss him. Well that all didn’t happen ;( We were leading class C by 12 laps at the time, we were off track for repairs for 1 hour 45 minutes. or appx 50 laps of down time. We lost class c by 29 laps. Dats the way the nickles crumble ;)“

Ugh.. That’s rough. (Title aside) you saw the crashing coming as he started to approach. It was inevitable (not your fault). Sorry he lost. That’s a tough one to swallow since it was completely avoidable by the other driver.

“Dude, wrecked my car on the track today.”

“Really? Harlequin notice.”

Even for a VW, that is some pretty impressive tripoding

The recording driver should’ve done something, surely. You could see the Jetta spinning a mile off. There was a gap on the inside that the recording driver didn’t go for until a collision was unavoidable. The gap was there the whole time!

yeah he shoulda road it off to the side instead of blocking up the track, meh, good job minimizing the damage.

I agree with your premise but I think he had to react much earlier. Twice in Lemons races, at the first hint of the back end coming around I was hard on the brakes. If you beat him to the braking, you can avoid him.

Unfortunately his plan was to just drive inside. Which fully loaded in a 3500 FWD monte carlo isn’t so feasible if the racing line is suddenly blocked. You got to be really defensive and throw away the turn early. To react once you see the spin is too late.

I see what you mean. It looks like maybe he was turning in, but a panicked dab of the brakes meant he didn’t quite make it inside. Such is life in a Monte Carlo

There’s something about racers that makes you absolutely not want to give up the momentum in the turn. The thing is though in Lemons, any metal to metal is a penalty so you have to recalibrate your thinking. Because regardless how much it was the other guy’s fault, you pay too. But when you think about it, its not a bad way to go, especially when the other guy may have no track experience. There is 1/10th the metal to metal in lemons compared to real enduro’s.

But to do that.... It means you have to be off the gas and on the brakes hard the first instance of things appearing sketchy. I hope if it were me, I would have been covering the brakes the first instant of watching the jetta make such a hard turn in.

The other thing to remember is, you can never over-avoid an accident. I once had a miata spin another miata in front of me at a start in a left turn. I knew the grass was flat on the left and eased it over to the grass maybe 10' at about 60 mph. When I got home, I watched the in car video and I could see the shadow of the miata go by my right side. He must have missed only by inches. Hat I stayed on track, I would have cleard the mess 9 times out of 10, but just not this time. But I played it (over) safe and it worked out.

That’s excellent. I like their dedication to keeping things cheap and accessible.

I agree. It’s very easy for a spinning car to find grip and end up rolling toward the other side of the track. So many of those NASCAR videos you watch a guy crash who had a clean path through the wreckage, because it gets closed.
